It was raining when Emilia arose from her slumber. As she prepared a single cup of coffee, thunder echoed throughout the small apartment. Emilia looked at the clock at quickly glanced to the front door. “She’s running a bit late” Emilia thought to herself. She checked her phone and saw a message from Simone saying that she was given some papers to look over and will be running a little late. She decided to pick up the paper from the morning and read it while she waited.
Her latest review of the newest film had appeared in the paper. Reading over it, she admitted to herself that it was not her best analysis of a film and wished she had more time to write a better review. But her editor wanted the piece as soon as possible so she gave him what she had.
As soon as she finished the paper there was a knock on the door and Emailia went to open it. Simone was standing in front of the door with a soaked umbrella and a large green trench coat over her red business suit. Emilia wrapped her arms around Simone with a great big hug. “Sorry I’m late Emmi. Stevenson wanted me to look over some files before he left for his vacation. Oh, careful sweetie, you’ll get your cloths all wet.” Indeed, Emilia’s old sleep ware shorts and shirt got a bit wet. She gave a shrug “It’s okay. These were old anyway and I was going to change out them anyway after coffee.” Simone put her coat in a plastic bag and put it next to door as Emilia poured her the cup of coffee. Simone took the cup, thanked her, and they sat down at the table and began their weekly talk.
Simone took a long sip of the coffee and gave a satisfactory noise. “Is this the new blend that Andrew told you about last week?” Emilia gave a quick nod “Yeah, they just got it Tuesday and he gave me a discount.” Simone put down the cup and asked, “Doesn’t he know that you can’t exactly eat or drink anything anymore?” Emilia shook her head “You are the only human who does and can know about any of this, otherwise I’m in big trouble.” “Alright I get it, big secret. Let’s change the subject. How’s your writing coming along? I read your review in the paper this morning. It was pretty good. I’m thinking of taking a date to see the film tomorrow.” Emilia gave an inquisitive look “Oh, who are they?” Simone gave a dismissive wave, “Just someone from the office. I’ll give you more details if I think it will go anywhere. What about you, have you meet anyone new.” Emilia gave a solemn nod “Not really, I’ve been busy with my writing to go and look for someone.”
Simone rolled her eyes “Oh come on. You and I both know that you aren’t even halfway done with your new book, and it’s been three years since you last worked on it. Face it, you still haven’t gotten over Robin breaking up with you. Emmi, it’s been four years, you said y’all broke up on amicable terms.” Emilia shook her head. “We did, sort of, but she told me this was a common thing, and it’s what she wanted, and I really wanted please her.” Emilia put her head into her arms and gave a large sigh. When she made eye contact with Simone again, she had some blood around her eyes and on her hands. Simone was taken aback by the sight.
Emilia took some napkins and wiped the blood from her hands and eyes. “Sorry, this how Kindred cry. I know it uber weird.” Simone gave an understating gaze. “I’m sorry. You’ve told me all this like what, six months ago, and it still feels like yesterday when you told me all this and asked for my blood.” Emilia finished cleaning herself up “Yeah, I’m sorry to lay all this on you out of know where. I hadn’t fed in a couple of days, and I didn’t feel up to asking Robin for help. It’s kind of what triggered that dry spell.” Simone quickly interjected “Isn’t there some other vampires that you could have asked for help?” Emilia thought for a moment, “well there is one other Kindred that I know but they're a bit odd, and I didn’t want to disturb them.”
Simone thought for a while before “Fair enough. Also, I never got a chance to thank you for confiding in me. And while coming out as a vampire is a lot harder thing to wrap my mind around than you being trans, I think I handled both with tack.” Emilia raised an eyebrow “Simone, you nearly collapse onto the floor when I told you. You would have given yourself a major head injury if I hadn’t caught you.” Simone gave a smirk “okay you have me there. So, what happened the last time you saw Robin to trigger such a dry spell.” Emilia averted her gaze for a quick second before meeting Simone eyes again “You were right, I’m still not over Robin, I still love her so much. When I last saw her, I told her as much, but she just said that it was just the bond that sire and childe have and nothing more. I said that it made sense, but I don’t think that’s the case.”
Emilia gave a quick contemplative pause before continuing “Simone I don’t know if I can handle being rejected or abandoned again. First with my family and then Robin. It just seems that anyone who ever loved me will just leave me or kick me out of their lives. And as a gay transwoman, I don’t think my prospects of finding someone are great.” Simone put her hands on Emilia’s and with a gentle voiced reassured her “Emmi, you have been able to accomplish so much despite all of that. If you were able to navigate what life had thrown at you before you became a vampire, you can certainly get through everything this dark new world will throw at you. Now before I give an even more cliché speech, you look hungry” Simone began to unbutton the top few buttons of her suit. Emilia gave a nervous response, “are you sure about this whole arrangement. You can back out of it if you want?” Simone moved her hair out the way of her left neck and chuckled. “Come on Emmi, if I haven’t backed out in the last two months that we have been doing this, I’m not going to back out now. And besides, I look forward to this every week.” Emilia slowly approached Simone, put her arms around Simone, and bit down on Simone’s exposed neck.
